Mit PCIe 4.0 lässt sich der Datendurchsatz von z. B. Netzwerkkarten und SSDs deutlich erhöhen, was die Technologie besonders im Serverbereich interessant macht. Unter der Prämisse Punkt-zu-Punkt Verbindung erreicht PCIe 4.0 pro Lane bis zu 1969 MB/s in beide Richtungen. Bei vier Lanes sind also maximal 7876 MB/s möglich, das Doppelte der bisherigen Version PCIe 3.0.
