PCIe with serial RS-232 interfaces inclusive current
Advantages
- Serial devices receive a power supply
- Serial cards optionally support a voltage of 5 V or 12 V at pin 1/4/8/9
What distinguishes these cards?
Additional to the standard RS-232 interface, these PCIe cards have a special feature. They provide current-carrying serial interfaces up to 2 A, whereby connected devices can be supplied with power. Here, a jumper can be used to manually switch between a voltage of 5 or 12 V to ensure operation of the respective connected device. The cards differ firstly in respect of their data transfer rates and secondly in the current-carrying pins.
Subdivision by current-carrying pins
Pin 1/4/8/9
For the cards with a data transfer rate of 230.4 Kbps, the voltage can be set individually at the single ports. The current that the interface draws internally via the computer's power supply can be routed via pins 1, 4, 8 and 9 respectively. Thus, the voltage requirement of the external devices can be achieved (see article [1] and [2]).
Pin 1/9
For another group of cards, the current drawn from the PC's internal power supply and thus the voltage supply can be provided via pins 1 and 9. With some cards a significantly higher data transfer rate of up to 921.6 Kbps is possible, see articles [3] to [5]. In articles [6] to [8], the data transfer rates again vary, whereby here, too, voltage can be supplied internally via pin 1 and 9.
