What is a hub?

Hub - what does it actually mean? The word stands for distributor / distribution center and node. In a general way, you can say that a hub can signals or data receive and or send, comparably to a distribution center where parcels can be received and sent forward again. On this info page it is about external USB hubs which can be used to extent the computer system at home, at work and office.

1. Quick info: Network hub

In the field of IT networks, a hub is initially a distribution point that connects network nodes with each other in a star configuration, i.e. devices/hosts in the computer network, e.g. via Ethernet. The hub as a part of a well-working IT system or also a working place at home is, beneath the router and switch, a main element of network technology.

2. In focus: USB hub

Secondly, and that’s the topic of this info site, the external USB hub is part of IT peripherals and accessories. A USB hub is a USB device that can spread a USB signal to several stations. In the meantime, there are hubs with up to 28 USB ports or more. At work, at the office, or at home, this number of slots is usually not even necessary, and a hub with three to seven ports is sufficient. If the computer has got a hardly reachable USB port, or if the notebook has got too few ports in face of all the devices you wish to connect: A USB hub is the fast solution to extent the computer system.

3. Self-powered / bus-powered USB-Hubs

USB hubs can be differentiated by the kind of their power supply. If the hub is designed to have its own power supply, it will bring a plug-in power supply unit. It works self-powered and can regularly provide the maximum current specified by itself to any device connected to it.

In contradiction, the bus-powered hub takes its current from the bus itself, as the name already implies. At this variant, the hub and all devices connected to it share the maximal current provided.

Finally, a kind of mixed form is the hub that works self-powered as long as it is connected to a power supply unit. If the power supply is unplugged it works bus-powered.
