M.2 is a specification for internal expansion cards of PC motherboards. Intel presented M.2 as a successor to the mSATA interface, initially with the name Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF). The M.2 interface can not only transmit SATA signals, but also USB and PCI Express.
NVMe (NVM Express) is a protocol for the operation of fast SSDs on the PCI Express bus. The SSDs are available as M.2 or PCIe cards, or as 2.5" hard drives with U.2 interface.
U.2 The U.2 connector (formerly SFF-8639) is used in 2.5" NVMe SSDs. To convert to U.2, there are M.2 to U.2 adapters, or PCI Express to U.2 cards. These adapters have an SFF-8643 connector; the corresponding U.2 cable (SFF-8643 to SFF-8639) is used for connection. The U.2 connector (SFF-8639) is mechanically identical to the SATA Express device plug, but provides four PCI Express lanes through a different usage of available pins.
